When I was in grad school up the road at UI, Henning often could be seen strolling around Fairfield, Iowa -- US headquarters of his guru, the Marharesi Mahesh Yogi. I guess he died before his plans to make a big theme park in the middle of nowhere bankrupted him entirely.

I loved the Magic Show as a kid and was gratified to find that he was as wonder-struck listening to music as a local bookstore or playing frisbee in the town square as he was performing complex illusions. He was probably just a perpetually happy guy.

He used to be married to that psychologist that used to be on Oprah a lot...Barbara DeAngelis. She was very pretty..way prettier than he was.

He died didn't he?

Sista, I was thinking the same thing. My automatic thought was "Doug is dead."
C, you are sending me past Xanax into the world of thorazine now.
Incidentally, set your TIVO, Criss Angel Mind Freak is on all day.

According ot the ever-reliable Wikipedia: "Doug James Henning (Birth: May 3, 1947, Death: February 7, 2000 to Liver Disease) born in Winnipeg, Canada. A master magician, illusionist, and escape artist, he is credited with reviving the magic show as a form of mass entertainment in North America, beginning in the 1970s."

In a master feat of illusion, Henning lives on forever here: http://www.doughenning.com/ (and now, of course, on The Dry Spot).

I hadn't realized that he died. How did I miss that? Liver disease. Yikes.
